I. Scanning Traps



1.  Starting the Palm Pilot

A.  Turn on the Palm Pilot by pressing the “green” button on the lower left-hand side.

Note: * the Palm Pilot has a 2 minute power shutoff. To bring the screen back,
             hit the green button again.
          * A pointer/stylus is located on the back left side of the unit to make using
             the Palm Pilot easier. Your finger will also work.
          * Do not use a ink pen or a sharp object on the screen!!!!

B. Once the screen comes on, you should see rows of icons.  If not, lightly press the
    “Applications” arrow on the lower left of the screen with your stylus.

2.  Getting into the program

A. To begin scanning the traps, press the “Cotton Boll”.

Note: It will take it a few moments to go through the procedure.

B. You will be asked to scan your Employee Badge Code.  (You should
     have been provided with one. If not, check with Paul). At the top edges
     of the unit, press one or both of the green buttons, which are located on
     either side of the Palm Pilot, to scan the barcode.  The red line should
     cover the entire barcode in order for scanning to be effective! The unit
     should be approximately 5” away from the barcode. You will here a beep
     when the barcode has been read by the Palm Pilot.

Note: You can adjust the angle and level of the palm pilot to help it read.

C. Three options will appear –“Open Field”, “Re-Open Field”, and
     Cotton Bolls with Field Numbers in them.

(Open is for new fields to be entered into the Palm Pilot)
(Re-open is for previously entered fields that are already in the
 Palm Pilot that have been closed)
(Cotton Bolls with field numbers have been entered but are not completed.)
Press desired option.

3.  Operations in the program

I. Opening Fields

A. After pressing the “Open” button, a screen will appear with different
     menu’s/options. At this screen, enter the crop stage at the menu box on
     the left, by highlighting the current   stage(if the desired stage is not
     available, press the arrow button on the bottom right of the box for more options.)

B. Next, enter the Field I.D. on the line under “Scan or Enter Field I.D.”

C. Manually entering Field I.D. : At the same screen, first make sure
     that the box in the top-left marked “Enter” is checked.  First tap the
     dotted lines above Trap ID.  Once this is done, tap the small dot at
     the bottom right of the screen labeled  “123”.  A screen that looks
     like a number pad will pop up.  If not, at the bottom of the new
     window, there are three buttons: “abc”, “123” and “Int’l”.  Press
     “123”. Then, a numeric keyboard will come up, and then you can
     press the numbers you need for the field ID, and then press “Done”.

Note: The entering of the field ID will only have to be done once per field.

II. Re-Opening Closed Fields

A. After pressing the “Re-Open” button, a screen will appear with
     3 different options. In the center of the screen, you will see “Select a Field”.
     Highlight the field you want. Next, press the “open” button.
     (If you do not want this screen press “cancel”.)

B.  Once you have opened the field, you will be at the “Current Fields Screen.”

III. Opening Existing Fields

A. You should see in the middle of the screen Cotton Bolls with Field
     Numbers, if you have opened any fields.

B. Next, Press on the field you want to open.

C.  You are now at the Trap Count Screen! At the top of the screen,
      there is information about the field you are editing. In the middle of the
      screen, you see “scan or enter Trap ID” and “count”.

Note: You can either Scan the Trap or Manually Enter ID. For input instructions
see above.

D. Once the trap Id and the Boll Weevil Count has been entered, Press
      the Save button. THIS MUST BEEN DONE TO KEEP YOUR WORK!

E.  You can now enter all the traps for this field at this time. Hitting the
      “Save” button after each trap.

F.  Once you have entered all the traps and boll counts, press the “Field
     Summary” button on the bottom right of the Trap Count screen.

IV. Field Summary Screen.

A. This screen gives you the option of checking all you traps for that field.
     (Please double check your work to cut down on errors!) The list on the
     right give you all the traps along with the counts that have been taken.

Note: At this screen you can still edit the traps that have been entered. If there is
          an error with a trap you can edit or delete it at this time.

B. Once you are finished with the field, Press the “Close Field” button on
     the bottom right of the palm pilot.

Note: There are two additional buttons at the bottom of the Field Summary
          screen. The “Return” button sends you back to the “trap count” screen.
          The “Del Field” deletes the current field you have been editing. (There is a
          warning screen that pops up that makes sure you want to delete the field.)

C. After pressing the close field button, you are at the “Close Field”
    Screen. This screen gives you three things.
       1. the total amount of traps in the field.
       2. the number of record traps
       3. the number of unread traps.

Note: You can edit the number of traps at this location by pressing on the
           number of unreadable traps.

D. If you are not finished with this field you can press the return button to
     go back to the Field Summary. If you are finished with the field, press
     the “Close Field” button.  Once this is done, you will have to re-open a
     field to make any changes.
